Away from prying eyes they pray

Since their release from Vellore Central Jail on bail last January, senior Kanchi
Shankaracharya Srisri Jayendra Saraswati and the junior pontiff, Srisri Vijayendra Saraswati, have spent a year of quietude that recalls the even tenor of their lives 15 springs ago — before they became embroiled in national politics. They spent their customary four-month retreat, chaturmasya (July to October), meditating and praying at Tirupati.

Power plays 2006

The arrest of the Shankaracharya of Kanchi on charges of conspiracy to murder a former mutt accountant led to the BJP peremptorily snapping its ties with J Jayalalithaa's AIADMK. Likewise, the meaningless boycott of Parliament by the NDA in late-2004 led to an exasperated Telugu Desam Party breaking off its alliance with the BJP.
