Away from prying eyes they pray
Shankaracharya Srisri Jayendra Saraswati and the junior pontiff, Srisri Vijayendra Saraswati, have spent a year of quietude that recalls the even tenor of their lives 15 springs ago — before they became embroiled in national politics. They spent their customary four-month retreat, chaturmasya (July to October), meditating and praying at Tirupati.

The siege of Kanchi

The edifice of Kanchi Kamakoti Peeth, with strands of history, culture, tradition and spirituality woven into a tapestry spanning over 2,500 years, is sought to be demolished through the instrument of a "secular state" and the abetment by a section of the "secularists." While this vandalism reminiscent of blasting the Bamiyan Buddha is on, the self-proclaimed defenders of human rights and the "secular" parties, are conspicuous by their eloquent silence.

Junior seer questioned
rediff, December 28, 2004
The special police team investigating the Sankararaman murder case on Tuesday questioned the junior Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Mutt, Vijayendra Saraswati, for three hours in Kanchipuram.Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati is the prime accused in the case.
The junior seer arrived at the headquarters of the team situated in the forest bungalow at 1100 IST. However, the police did not permit his van into the complex. They also refused to allow the seer's padukka (wooden footwear) and his traditional short stool inside. This caused tempers to run high among the seer's followers, who, along with the mutt's advocates, entered into an argument with the policemen.
A visibly agitated Vijayendra Saraswati pacified his followers and preferred to walk the stretch leading to the bungalow on bare foot. The traffic on the road outside the complex was disrupted for some time, as the mutt van that brought the seer drew several curious onlookers. The police later allowed the advocates to enter the bungalow with the padukka and the stool. They also let the van inside the complex. The junior seer has now be questioned twice in three days.
The police had first questioned him on December 26.

Chandraswami was behind Rajiv killing
NEW DELHI: Godman Chandraswamy is amid a controversy again: the CBI has told a Delhi court that he may have financed Rajiv Gandhi's assassination 13 yearsago.
This is the first time the investigating agency has revealed details about Chandraswami's alleged role in the former PM's assassination by a LTTE 'human bomb' at Sriperambudur in Tamil Nadu. CBI made its revelations on Friday whileopposing the tantrik's plea for permission to go abroad to give spiritual discourses.
Evidence and material pointed an accusing finger towards Chandraswami and "raiseserious doubts regarding his involvement in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi",CBI superintendent of police B N Mishra told metropolitan magistrate V K Khanna. The enforcement directorate, which has accused Chandraswami of Fera violations, also opposed his application for permission to go abroad. The court has fixed December 13 as the next date of hearing and directed Chandraswami to appearin person.
The godman's fresh troubles could well have been given momentum by the changed political equation at the Centre. The dominance of Rajiv Gandhi loyalists inthe government could be a factor in the sudden revival of interest in Chandraswami.

VARANASI - The Dwarikapeeth Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand today asked the beleaguered Kanchi Kamakoti Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Jayendra Saraswatito step down from his post until proved innocent by the court of law in an alleged murder case.
"The seer must step down from the post of Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakotipeeth until he is absolved by the court of the charges against him in the Shankaramanmurder case," he told reporters here.
"If a public representative or a minister was required to quit his post for alleged complicity in a criminal or murder case, then why not Shankaracharya also quit his post," he asked.
Stepping up his attack on the incarcerated spritual leader, Swaroopanand also questioned the former's credentials as Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakotipeeth and said that how could he claim to be a Shankaracharya when the Kanchi KamakotiPeeth was not annointed as one of the four peeths of the Hindu religion.
The adi Shankaracharya's had founded only four peeths, Puri, Dwarka, Shrinegeri and Badrika Ashram Peeth and there was no Peeth of Kanchi Kamkoti in the originalorder, he said adding Swami Jayendra was a mere priest of a mutt.

A Fifth Math?
By all accounts Adi Sankara's time was some where around 8th to 9th century AD. And of the four Maths that he established Kanchi is not one of them. Either the Mutt is less than 1100 years old or if it is 482 B.C. as is claimed in the news then it must not have been established by Adi Sankaracharya.
It is generally accepted as tradition that Adi Sankaracharya, the famous Advaita philosopher, founded four maths (monasteries) at Sringeri, Puri, Dwaraka and Badrinath; that he meditated under the Badri tree at Jyotir-pitha, and finally passed away near Kedarnath. None of the four recognized mathas claims jurisdiction over the other three.
However, the Kanchi math claims that Sankaracharya established a fifth math in Kanchi, with jurisdiction over the recognized four mathas; that Sankaracharya ascended a sarvagna-pitha not in Jyotispeeth, but at Kanchi, and that he passed away not in Kedarnath, but at Kanchipuram.
These and other such claims have been widely publicized by the followers of the Kanchi math with the direct participation of and encouragement from the heads of the Kanchi math, including the recently departed centenarian Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati and his successor Sri Jayendra Saraswati.

The Real Shankaracharya
By Shobha Vasudevan
Rediff News, November 22, 2004
In the smutty power and revenge match between individuals, along with the arrested seer, a 2,500-year-old institution has also been sullied, an institution that has stood the test of time, of cultural invasions and of religious warfare.
The Shankaracharya is not a person, but a sacrosanct position of eminence in people's minds. After this episode, irrespective of its outcome, will the devotee still feel the sanctity of this position and this institution?
Will he not feel demoralised and despondent about his faith, against the overwhelming backdrop of scepticism? Will millions of our citizens with a beaten spirit, be able to place credence and hope in a leader again?

Even though it has been many days since the Shankaracharya of Kanchi was arrested — he was taken into custody on the night of November 11 — I have resisted writing about the issue for the most basic of all reasons: I know virtually nothing about the Shankaracharya and do not understand all the facts of the case in which he has been implicated.
But now that the arrest has become a national issue — even former President R Venkataraman participated in the dharna organised by the BJP in Delhi — perhaps the time has come to look at some of the questions raised by the arrest.

What Led to the Seer's Arrest
The Times of India, November 20, 2004
The Plot
The Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi has been accused of plotting and being an accomplice in the murder of Sankara Raman, a manager of the Vardharaja Perumal temple near Kancheepuram.
Raman was murdered at September 3, 2004 at about 5.30 a.m., allegedly by five criminals from Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Police had arrested 14 others in the same case earlier. They arrested Shankaracharya under IPC Section 120-B (conspiracy), 302 (murder) and 109 (abetment) on Friday morning.
The police has been making inquiries at the mutt in connection with murder. Earlier, a police constable attached to the mutt was suspended, though the police had stated that the suspension had nothing to do with the murder case.
Raman, once a devotee of the pontif, reportedly turned critical of the Sankaracharya and made several accusations about him, including those of financial irregularities.
